This was a four-year project when the house\u00a0 underwent repair and restoration as well as involving creative practitioners to work and respond to the heritage site.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lisasheppy.co.uk\/?attachment_id=1844\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1844\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1844\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lisasheppy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Croome-63.jpg\" alt=\"croome 2\" width=\"939\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lisasheppy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Croome-63.jpg 939w, https:\/\/www.lisasheppy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Croome-63-300x111.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 939px) 100vw, 939px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Soul to Sole\u2019 was an intricate installation where creative practitioners were given the brief to encapsulate a character from Croome&#8217;s past, exploring themes of \u2018loss and survival\u2019 within a pair of shoes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lisasheppy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Wendys-shoes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3482 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lisasheppy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Wendys-shoes-218x300.jpg\" alt=\"Wendy's shoes\" width=\"383\" height=\"527\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lisasheppy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Wendys-shoes-218x300.jpg 218w, https:\/\/www.lisasheppy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Wendys-shoes-743x1024.jpg 743w, https:\/\/www.lisasheppy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Wendys-shoes-768x1059.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lisasheppy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Wendys-shoes.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 383px) 100vw, 383px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With decades of history, Croome still holds an echo of its former self and everyone who has ever lived there. The two micro installations were sited within the shoe-rack housed in the basement of Croome Court.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lisasheppy.co.uk\/?attachment_id=1829\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1829\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1829\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lisasheppy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Croome-11.jpg\" alt=\"croome 3\" width=\"939\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lisasheppy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Croome-11.jpg 939w, https:\/\/www.lisasheppy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Croome-11-300x111.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 939px) 100vw, 939px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a creative resident I worked collaboratively with shoe designer <a href=\"http:\/\/shoemakingcroomecourt.wordpress.com\/2014\/07\/13\/lisa-sheppy\/\">Maud van den Broecke<\/a>, who made the leather shoe constructions for my pieces combining glass, ceramics and printmaking to materialise my responses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lisasheppy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Croome-pic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3486 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lisasheppy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Croome-pic-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"Croome\" width=\"323\" height=\"482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lisasheppy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Croome-pic-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/www.lisasheppy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Croome-pic-768x1149.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lisasheppy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Croome-pic.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 323px) 100vw, 323px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Wendy and George Hogarth were the inspiration for my contribution to the \u2018Soul to Sole\u2019 project. George Hogarth was a fighter pilot in the RAF during World War II and Wendy was in the Wrens working as a radio mechanic. I met Wendy Hogarth and recorded her lucid memories of her experiences at Croome with her future husband, George. These conversations provided a way of imagining the day-to-day domestic challenges of living at Croome during World War II, when it was the centre for research into radar and a resting place for fighter jet pilots.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u2018Our hot water bottles at bedtime were used for washing in the morning, and the loos were flushed when necessary with a bucket of water. (My husband who was a pilot living in 7 Site remembers his batman melting snow for shaving purposes).
